America UnCanceled: @RepRussellFry joins @mercedesschlapp to talk Trafficking Survivors Relief Act
America Uncanceled
South Carolina Representative Russell Fry breaks down the Trafficking Survivors Relief Act in the House and what the House is doing to address the open southern border, the root cause of the spread of human trafficking in the U.S.
The Act is taking legislation meant to help victims of human trafficking that is already at the state level in the majority of states and applying it to the federal level.
“46, 47 states have already done something similar in their state law, and what we have right now in the federal component is really a failure of help to victims,” explains Fry. “What it does is it allows victims of human trafficking to tell their story, and then it would provide an affirmative defense for any charge that they may receive.”
The act aims to protect victims from criminal charges for prostitution in order to help them break the cycle of trafficking and start a new life with stable and safe employment. Fry is optimistic that the bill will be successful and is encouraged that it will become law by the bipartisan support it’s received so far. Fry and his Republican congressional colleagues are also working to nip human trafficking in the bud by securing the border and holding Biden officials, including Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, for their neglect.
He is also optimistic that Americans will vote for a change in administration in November that will finally secure the border.
