Former Deputy National Security Advisor of the United States and CPAC board member K.T. McFarland hosts a conversation on national security with lecturer and research fellow Michael Anton at CPAC 2023. As the title suggests, the more specific topic of the conversation is nuclear war. McFarland and Anton relive their experiences in the Trump administration in making the point that nuclear war was not a concern until Biden took office and Vladimir Putin felt comfortable and confident enough to invade Ukraine. Anton theorizes that Putin believed the Ukraine war would be a quick three day war given the small size of Ukraine relative to Russia. Instead, the war has dragged on for over a year thanks to the aid of western nations to Ukraine. Unfortunately, the United States has also been aiding Russia by cutting back on our own energy production and forcing a reliance on Russian oil and natural gas, which, of course, only profits Russia and directly finances their military ventures. Revamping the American energy industry should be part of the strategy to deescalate the war, which is currently at a stalemate and on the verge of nuclear war. Anton and McFarland advance that an energy independent United States is vital to placing the United States in a powerful position to mediate peace negotiations to finally bring the war to an end.
