Liberty & Justice: Carla Sands at CPAC DC 2023
Ambassador Carla Sands joins Matt Whitaker on this episode of Liberty & Justice to talk foreign policy and navigating the United States’ relationship with NATO countries.
Sands was ambassador to the Scandinavian and NATO country of Denmark, including Greenland and the Faroe Islands, under the Trump administration. She worked for the business and national security interests of the United States in these areas, primarily focusing on keeping Greenland free from Chinese influence, encouraging use of clean, American energy overseas, and putting pressure on NATO countries to pay up their promised contributions.
“What we’re asking them to do is contribute the three ‘C’s: Cash, Capabilities, and Contributions. If you look at these richer European countries, they really are acting like we are the sugar daddy, like the U.S. is going to protect them and going to defend them, but NATO agreement is Article 5, we all come to the assistance if one of us is attacked, and its iron-clad, but Article 3 comes before Article 5. Article 3 says you can defend your own territory and come to the aid of others, and I challenge more than half of the EU countries, they cannot do that today,” Sands explained.
Sands took on the NATO issue with an America first attitude, realizing that the United States had been taken advantage of for decades in trade and military defense. Sands was met with hostility on the trade issue by the European Union, but found cooperation and friendliness from individual businesses in Denmark. In fact, Sands led Denmark to be the United States’ foremost trade partner. In doing so, she also thwarted aspects of China’s trade and military ventures in Europe and North America.
Now, Sands is taking her experience to the America First Policy Institute at the Center for Energy and Environment where she advocates for clean, effective, and affordable American energy.
