CEO of Newsmax Christopher Ruddy and Mercedes Schlapp talk the role of Newsmax in American media. Ruddy, a former reporter at The New York Post, founded Newsmax in 2014 to give a variety of outlets for conservative voices. He noticed a disparity in the number of liberal media channels and the number of conservative channels. Newsmax was the solution to this problem, and it separates itself from other conservative channels by allowing a spectrum of opinions on the Right. In line with this policy, the channel is not endorsing one candidate as the Republican nominee in the 2024 presidential election, but is welcoming all Republican candidates to engage in open dialogue with hosts. Americans have very warmly welcomed the channel, skyrocketing it to success. Nonetheless, Newsmax faced challenges from big tech and the mainstream media. In January of 2022, DirecTV dropped Newsmax from their lineup, a move that many recognized as censorship by a big, liberal corporation. Newsmax has also been sued in a Delaware court for supposed ‘misinformation’ in their reporting of the Trump campaign’s perspective on the 2020 election. Regardless, Newsmax is continuing its mission to be an open platform and additional resource for conservatives.
