The @billwaltonshow with guest Dr. Stephen Bryen
Senior Fellow at the Center for Security Policy, Stephen Bryen, joins Bill Walton on this episode of The Bill Walton Show to discuss the war in Ukraine.
Bryen is observing turns for the worse in the war in Ukraine in favor of Russia. Though both sides have experienced significant losses, challenges, and expenses, Ukraine is at the mercy of support from Western Europe and the United States and taking on a giant of a nation and a nuclear power in Russia. The continuation of the war is poised to be disastrous for all involved. The war is already detrimental with the loss of life, the mass exit of refugees from Ukraine, and the enormous expense to the aiding nations.
Because of this, Bryen urges the United States to trade in its financial and military aid to Ukraine for mediating peace negotiations because aiding Ukraine has proven to not be in the United States’ best interests.
Bryen clarifies his position, “I am certainly not pro-Russia. I’m not pro-Ukrainian. I’m not anything but pro-America, and I don’t think our national interest is being served, in my opinion.”
Bryen sees that supporting Ukraine is increasing the United States’ federal debt and weakening the military at the expense of the American people losing funding for domestic projects and losing military protection at home. The war is proving just as costly for Europe and Russia, which has had to invest in new military equipment, with no end in sight and the potential for volatility in Ukraine if Vladimir Zelensky loses the next presidential election. Further, the war has destabilized international relations by tightening the alliance between Russia and China as European nations drift away from the United States’ best foreign policy and national security interests. Thus, Bryen urges peace negotiations as soon as possible.
Unfortunately, he comments, “negotiations won’t start unless Washington wants them to start,” and that will only come with a change in president.
