The @billwaltonshow with guest Stella Morabito
Author of The Weaponization of Loneliness, Stella Morabito, joins Bill Walton on this episode of The Bill Walton Show to share her insights on how authoritarian regimes use isolation to control a population.
Through her study of past tyrannical regimes and of current human behavior, Morabito finds that authoritarian regimes isolate their subjects by constructing a culture of fear and conformity. Morabito observes a similar pattern of manipulation of society in the past regimes of Cromwell, Robespierre, Lenin, Hitler, and Mao. These regimes all established an inner circle of people to promulgate the primary thought of the regime and police the people into submission.
“They all seem to use what I call the machinery of loneliness to push their agendas forward,” Morabito explains. “The machinery of loneliness, today, I call it…identity politics to divide us, political correctness to induce self-censorship to induce that fear of being ridiculed or rejected, and then, its all enforced by mob agitation.”
The effect of identity politics, political correctness, and mob agitation have been reinforced in the United States by the external factors of social media, pandemic lockdowns, and social and emotional learning curriculum forced upon the public education system. These factors explain why polls show that liberals still suffer the most from a sense of loneliness, but conservatives experience fear in expressing their views. Further, Morabita notes that the fear and vulnerability that loneliness produces in the human psyche alters physical and psychological behavior into complying with peer pressure. Thus, she advances that totalitarian regimes force their subjects into vulnerable conditions to then exploit their hampered thinking and ultimately restrict freedom of thought.
Morabita concludes that these kind of regimes that Americans are seeing take over their own government and institutions with woke ideologies are “anti-thought” with the aim of total control. She conveys this reality in her book especially to young people entering the realm of liberal higher education. She hopes it empowers the next generation to overcome the machinery of loneliness and be part of the solution in establishing and supporting parallel institutions and counter strategies.
